Woolworths launches over 40 new wines

Woolworths is increasingly becoming the destination of choice to stock a well-curated wine cellar. Building on existing relationships with some of the top winemakers in South Africa, and with a focus on quality and price, the range is carefully developed and accessible, aiming to provide our customers with the best edited choice of wines.

The ‘Meet the Makers’ campaign celebrates Woolies’ long-standing partnerships with some of South Africa’s top wine producers, such as Spier, Villiera, Paul Cluver, Diemersfontein and Jordan Winery. Consistently producing outstanding wines exclusively for the brand, these include award-winning vintages, such as Spier’s ‘The Hutton’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 (R129.95) and Single Vineyard Windy Peak Sauvignon Blanc (R89.95). The significance of these partnerships is in the collaboration – instead of simply selecting an existing product, these wines are produced in conjunction with our wine experts to produce perfect results for our customers.

Woolworths continuously strives to innovate, and the new Ovation range—an exclusive BEE range of wines produced with Thokozani, an emerging wine producer whose home is at Diemersfontein – is evidence of that. With a focus on wine quality and value for money, Woolworths and Thokozani have begun their new relationship with three fruit-driven, easy-drinking wines, namely the Ovation Pinotage (R69.95), Merlot (R69.95) and Sauvignon Blanc (R59.95).

Woolies also continues to embrace new collaborations with other notable wineries including Hartenberg, Steenberg, Saronsberg and Waverly Hills, and the range of wineries—and wines—is ever-expanding. October 2015 saw the release of over 40 new wines in stores, including a craft wine selection, a fine wines range, not to mention the fast-growing selection of imported wines, too.

The craft wines range comprises of eight locally-produced wines. Made in small batches, and in the trend of garagiste bottles, they have cool and quirky label designs, such as the old vine Chenin, Casting for Chris & Becoming Paul (R149.95), or the Third Round Red Blend (R199.95) both by Walser Wine Projects.

While the fine wines category is something that wine enthusiasts will enjoy dipping into, the value is exceptional. Prices vary from R200 to R500 a bottle, and the range consists of 15 wines from various wineries around South Africa. Favourites in the selection include Groot Constantia Chardonnay (R199.95), Cape Point Isliedh (R239.95), Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir (R339.95), Meerlust Rubicon (R319.95) and Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage (R499.95).

Provenance plays an important part in the selection of Woolworths’ cellar—all our wines, global or local, are stars of their region, and there’s always variety on offer. The assortment of wines imported via Marks & Spencer’s includes five delicious varietals, such as a Chateau Gillet Bordeaux (R129.95), and a White Burgundy (R129.95). Customers can also look forward to the introduction of four more wines to this range in January 2016, amongst which are two new French lines, a gorgeous Spanish Rioja, as well as Fiano from Italy.
